It’s been twelve hours since I saw ‘Taare Zameen Par’ but the thoughts still linger on. I keep going back to the strong visuals, the sight of young Ishaan crying in the dorm bathroom or the look on his face when he sees his portrait or any of the numerous compelling snapshots and my throat still chokes on them. There are actors and there are stars; and then there is Aamir Khan. Time and again he turns a new page in Indian Cinema and raises the bar with his excellent portrayal of characters, but this time he’s done it with his direction. “I’m a big fan” would be an understatement; I worship him, nonetheless, for his intellect if nothing else and understandably, had huge expectations from his directorial debut. “Taare Zameen Par” is nothing short of a masterpiece.
Ishaan (Darsheel Safary) has the most expressive face on screen today and through those large eyes, he takes the audience through his difficult journey of a just started life. He is adorable in whatever he does but circumstances are cruel. His plight combined with the excellent music and lyrics of “Maa” just floods you with emotion. It had been a long time since I experienced that ‘lump in the throat’ feeling while watching a movie and it did feel mighty nice. As Ishaan is left in a boarding school and is helped by Ram Shankar Nikumbh (Aamir Khan) in discovering and redeeming himself, you can’t help but rejoice in his progress. You can almost see the depth in his eyes; the promise that there is a lot more in there if you overlook his limited reading and writing abilities; a heart warming message that every child is special; every child is a tender and needs caring though he may be different.
The music is nothing short of brilliant, apt for every situation. The tone is set with “Jame Raho” which celebrates the difference in children and after that every time the guitar strings hum a tune, you feel the tug at your heart. With “Maa” it is heart wrenching, while at other times, “Kholo kholo” and “Mera Jahan” soothe your soul. Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy – Hats off to you guys. Anything less would’ve been injustice.
If you’re still looking for comments on the direction, pace, storyline, script etc. in my review, then probably you’ll never get it. Its best that you go and watch some action packed full of thrills, edge of the seat Hollywood movie because watching “Taare Zameen Par” is not about entertainment. It is a movie that sinks you in your chair, an experience that you need to live and come out flushed.
