We all see a lot of marketing on a daily basis. Print, Audio and Video adverts stare at you from everywhere and on top of that you have those annoying phone calls where a recorded voice tells you about the friends who are waiting to talk to you. All of this is visible but there have been a few brilliant tricks Companies have used which I’m sure most of you wouldn’t have realized. I’m no marketing student so maybe what looks like a genius trick to me, could be just another technique taught in B schools, so those who think that this is all very simple and regular, please excuse my ignorance.
Uncut Diamonds: I came across this concept last year when I went for some jewelry shopping. I’m actually very averse to diamonds as they rarely appreciate in value. But this salesman shows us a necklace which is supposedly the rage, the latest fashion. It looked like an antique piece, with glass twinkling from within a gold design. He tells me these are ‘Uncut Diamonds’. As the name suggests, they were diamonds alright but not cut to perfection as you would expect in jewelry. As a result, they didn’t appear to be dazzling white but they did twinkle a little. The price? Well, don’t remember exactly but very very expensive.
Just look at the brilliant trick used by the Diamond industry in introducing this ‘latest fashion’. They save lots of costs which would be usually paid to workmen in Surat or elsewhere in cutting and polishing the diamonds. Additionally, they do not have to worry too much about the color or brightness as these aren’t clearly visible in Uncut diamonds. So they could throw in a few low quality diamonds along with the high quality ones but still charge a heavy price for it. And you add a whole new line of jewelry for the women out there who already have a lot of diamonds and are looking for something else.
Farmville: Almost everyone who has been on Facebook has, one time or the other been addicted to a game such as Farmville or Acquarium or Tap Zoo (on the iphone) or the sort. If you’ve woke up in the morning and before drinking water yourself, logged on and fed your fishes, I suppose you’ve fallen to this trick. What is it? Well games like these ensure that you keep coming back to the site, over and over again. This continuous and recurring traffic does wonders for the site’s hits and numbers which in turn boost their advertisement space prices. In case of a regular game, you would finish a game and logout and then you may or may not return but these sort of games make you come back to the site regularly.
News in Slide Shows: This trick is another way of maximizing advertisement space. Ideally news items on websites were contained on a single page but there is only enough advertisement that you can have on 1 web page. So now, the news is shown in a series of slides which means every news item gets 3 to 5 web pages to sell advertisement space.
Shaving Gel bottles: I realized this just today morning. Actually, every time I press the lid on my shave gel bottle, almost always, a little extra shave gel comes out than what I need. Obviously, I can’t put it back in the bottle so it goes down the drain. But I’ve realized that it is in the interests of the shave gel companies to not fix this problem. The more gel that comes out, the more they sell. Imagine even if every shave gel user wastes few extra ounces of shave gel, collectively it translates into a huge volume. I’m sure they have this figured out.
Have you noticed any such gimmicks not so visible to the common eye?

firsttttttttttttt
Sometimes I think, this race to be first was also started by blogging website promoters… no? he he
Yeah i notices the shaving gel happens with me all the time end up using much more than is required and now reading this i realise NICE TRICK
and uncut diamonds wow..
I cant afford any
excellent points
neither could i afford them
So we’re in the same boat
Haha
Always wondered how to avoid wasting the shaving gel.
Surely the manufacturing companies have this figured out.
Good post.
Yeah, I think this problem isn’t gonna be resolved anytime soon.
Spilling the beans on my industry, aren’t you? Count me in… there was a time when advertising wasn’t about “creating a need”. It was about getting the right product to the right customer… ie. the one who needs it.
That shaving gel bottle is an insighful observation! There are case-studies on things like this…
One spoke of how a particular brand of shampoo added a single line to their “Instructions For Usage” text, and got higher frequency of purchases. The line was “Lather well & rinse. Repeat for better results”
And Colgate allegedly increased the diameter of the outlet on its tube… so again, it gets over faster than before.
Not to forget, how all toothpaste ads show the paste being applied across the length of toothbrush… when really, even half or 3/4 foams up just fine!
I could go on, and I guess I will, in a post!!!
Read this on the reader, and just had to contribute.
A confession here, Rakesh – I’m disillusioned by the industry. I do not want to sell a fridge to an eskimo. But that’s all that’s happening in my realm of advertising! I hope to find some genuine “talking to the consumer for what’s good for him / her”, like in good old days…. or simply quit.
Need to find an alternative to keep the livelihood funds coming in though!
It is only because you have said it here Crafty, that I will say this, that the concept of marketing never made sense to me. I understood it, when new products were introduced, and the professionals, would actually inform people about the genuine properties and uses of the product, but now it seems like a competition between who can bull*&^# more. But to be honest, a lot of professions don’t make sense to me, even mine did not when I was working. I could not find the worth or value of my work. I used to wonder what difference would it make to the world if this software did not exist, and the answer was simple, nothing at all. And now that I have a son, I am happy I quit, because I would never be able to tell him what I did, and what it meant. Gosh! rambling sorry, maybe I will do a post on this Rakesh.
And Rakesh, its all about making money, by hook or by crook, ethics and morality have simply gone out, and these things now have a nice sounding official name see, MARKETING, to me its simply cheating the common man!
But brilliant post, and great observations, I will in all likelihood, do a post on this myself!
@GM: C’mmon now, don’t compare marketing with softwares. I don’t know exactly what softwares did you write but Softwares have made life a lot easier.
Marketing, well that’s a completely different story. Will look forward to your post
@Crafty: It is all about money (selling). I know what you mean but just quitting may not be the solution coz. Ideals are nice only if you can afford them.
And I don’t know how it works but I think you just give ideas and if the Company doesn’t like them, they reject them. So I think, you can continue to give ideas that you like.
For instance, the Uncut Diamonds trick is not exactly cheating. It is genuine innovation for a commodity that has no practical ‘use’. You can continue to do that kind of thing.
good post… never gave any of it a second thought honestly.
Obviously, Coz. you don’t use shave gel…
Or do you? he he
uncut diamonds really never heard of them
PS: u know that a shopohlic is commenting when she choses to comment only on uncut diamonds in the whole post
I think the ad industry is alive because of people like me
he he, candid confessions
Craftyyyy, you don’t need to give up your job yet
And Uncut diamonds were supposedly quite the rage here in Dubai… and that was last year.
Am surprised, India hasn’t seen them. But then, I guess, in India what doesn’t dazzle isn’t a diamond. These, I suppose were more suited to NRI tastes – the hoardes of which come from UK and US to shop for jewellrey in Dubai.
The uncut diamonds example is apt. I thought it was the designers’ doing, but you are right, of course it’s so convenient for the Diamond Industry.
The designers are also part of the same industry. It is convenient.
Good post, and I agree, such gimmicks are there to trick people into buying more. Ditto with all the sales going around in malls.. 2 for price of one, blah blah.. one usually ends up paying more without realizing it, and their stocks are over in a jiffy!
And yes, I had in fact, actually taken pictures of a cream I bought, that had a decent size carton, and when I opened it, there was a platform made inside to increase the height because the actual cream container was 3/4th the size of the carton!! Never really put that up on the blog, but meant to.
Tried putting the picture here, but I realized i can’t upload pics on the comments section, can I?
Yeah, I’ve noticed this trick as well. Big Boxes but little product inside.
I don’t think we can put pics on comments… All you can do is leave a link if that pic is somewhere on the blog
oh yeaaaaah! My mousse behaves the same way as your shaving gel!
Did you know that to increase toothpaste sales the increased the width of the opening in the tube? People will use the same length of paste as they usually do, but the width ensures they use more paste anyway. Smart move na?
And you won’t belieeeeve the elaborate ways companies try and increase their sales.
I know of this one detergent company that funded a study in water shortage. Which seems like a very good thing to do. But NOTHING is done out of the goodness of their hearts as far as corporate is concerned! They funded it to have the info published and broadcasted in time for the launch of their new detergent that generates LESS foam, and hence requires less water to finish cleaning clothes.
Yeah, I heard about the toothpaste thing. And yes, sponsoring research studies is an innovative way. Tobacco companies have been sponsoring studies on the effects of smoking since a long long time. That is why probably, it took a long long time to ban smoking in public places in most countries.
And oh! I NEVER played farmville. And the only game I’m addicted to currently is the damn brickbreaker on my BB that’s threatening to give me Carpal Tunnel! *sigh*
And now there will be a study on harmful effects of looking at your mobile screen for a long time, coz. some other Company will bring out an anti glare mobile display that doesn’t harm your eyes
uncut diamond is very popular in India too, they call it Polki..it has been in fashion here for last 3 years.
